A Visit to Mexico

Subtitle
I arrive in Oaxaca, Mexico, on November 2nd, during Día de los Muertos. I’ve always heard about this special holiday, so I decide to visit the local cemetery to see it for myself. The place feels alive and full of energy. Families gather around the graves of their loved ones. They sweep away dust, decorate with bright marigold flowers, and light candles. The air smells of fresh bread and sweet incense. Children run around holding paper lanterns, while others fly colorful kites above the cemetery. Some families share food and music right next to the tombstones. Laughter and conversation fill the night. Back in my hometown in Canada, cemeteries are always quiet and solemn. We never think about playing music or celebrating in a graveyard. I realize I admire the Mexican tradition. They celebrate the memory of their ancestors, rather than hiding from the thought of death. It’s not only a day to honor the dead—it’s also a day to cherish life.
